Boxes & Birds – Toni Kaufman

My adventures with pottery began in Denali Park where I lived for 20 years. An artist friend and
I become obsessed with figuring out how to hand-build pots and fire them with the pit-fired
technique, which does not use glazes. It was rewarding and frustrating and wonderful and
resulted in some exquisite pots along with all the broken shards we produced.
Trying many different techniques and explorations over the years has evolved into a focus on
hand-building with minimal glazes and a lot of textural decoration.
